Metacritic has released its monthly listings for iPhone and iPad, and right there on top of the ratings charts is the same title currently sitting on top of the paid charts: Disney's Where's my Water?
Where's my Water is by the same team behind Disney's megahit JellyCar, and it features the company's first character ever created just for mobile games: Swampy the alligator. All Swampy wants to do in this one is take a shower, but of course in the sewers where he lives, the pipes are all cut off and blocked up with dirt. So it's the player's job, by scratching dirt off the screen, to guide the water down the screen and into Swampy's shower. There are three ducks to collect in each level (which you can pick up by diverting the water to them), collectibles hidden in the dirt in some areas, and a few other mechanics, including switches, acid water, and even plants that will grow and steal all of your water away.
The game is friendly and colorful, and the water mechanics are really brilliant and well done. The title itself is very similar to Cut the Rope, in look and feel if not in actual physics gameplay. So it's no surprise at all that Where's my Water is worth both the same accolades and the revenue. It's a great title, available right now on the App Store for just 99 cents.

It seems Apple is about to cease (almost) all shipments of boxed software to its education customers. ZDNet has published an email that was sent to "a major academic institution" (ZDNet does not mention who wrote or distributed the email, but it sounds like it could have come from a member of the school's faculty or staff). From the message:
"Apple confirmed today that, with limited exception, they will cease to ship boxed software to campus resellers. This includes Mac OS X Snow Leopard , iLife, iWork, Apple Remote Desktop, and Aperture, among others...The only products that will remain as boxed software offerings are Logic Express and Logic Studio.
The email's author goes on to encourage interested parties to sort through the remaining stock of boxed software for anything they might need.
Apple opened the Mac App Store in January of this year, which saw the beginning of the end for boxed software for consumers on the Mac. Now that Apple set to sever the supply of boxed software for educational institutions, it moves even closer to all-digital distribution.
The exceptions, as noted in the email, are Logic Express and Logic Studio. However, that is presumably only because those two software apps aren't available on the Mac App store yet. When they are, boxed software from Apple will see its final day.

As you may already know, I am a big fan of the hops, barley and yeast drink that's the world's oldest alcoholic beverage -- that's right, beer. And I've always been intrigued by the idea of Untappd, a social network built around sharing and discussing all of the various varieties and microbrews of beer out there. But of course no social network is complete without a mobile app that allows users to update while out and about, and that's exactly what Untappd's new iOS app does.
You can of course track and rate the various beers you're drinking and buying, and because it's all social, friends can see what you're tasting and share what they're tasting as well. Everything is of course geotagged (so you and a group can conquer the same bar's draughts, even if you're not there all together), and there are even badges to earn in the app itself. I'm sure a lot of badges were earned this weekend at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver.
I really like the look and feel of the app, and while we've seen this kind of thing tried before, Untappd seems to have another thing all strong social networks need: an actual network of people to follow. If you're also a fan of the pint and the brew, definitely check it out.
